Wellness Retreats - Quebec — A Wellness Journey Through Quebec

The province of Quebec stands out for its distinctive charm, pairing the varied natural landscapes of eastern Canada with long-standing traditions steeped in French atmosphere. Centered on the quaint Quebec City, with its surviving European-style buildings, and Montreal, which hums with the energy of a big city, the region is also a place to experience French-Canadian identity. With four distinct seasons and a rich natural environment that takes in mountains, dense forests, valleys, and countless rivers and lakes, Quebec offers endless things to do all year round: picnics, camping, and kayaking in spring and summer, and autumn-foliage treks and spa days in the fall.

Located in the old town of Quebec City, Le Monastère des Augustines began as the first hospital in North America, founded in 1639, and from the early 18th century it served as a convent. In 2015, after a decade-long, large-scale restoration project, it was reborn as a wellness retreat. The rooms are divided into traditional ones that recreate the convent’s simple way of life and modern ones with minimalist design. At the on-site restaurant, Le Vivoir, guests can practice “mindful eating,” savoring the meal itself as a form of meditation. The kitchen serves healthy dishes made with organic local ingredients, with gluten-free, vegan, and low-sodium options available. Guests are also free to visit the museum of medical history inside the building, which holds some 50,000 key documents and artifacts from the convent and hospital.
Wellness Experience
In the historic monastery building, a range of programs focused on balance of body and mind, including yoga, meditation, natural-healing workshops, and customized massages and treatments, run from morning to evening every day. Guests can also book an individual consultation that assesses their overall health and proposes a wellness strategy based on factors such as eating habits, stress management, and sleep patterns. In particular, the “Silent Morning,” which carries on the convent’s old tradition, is the retreat’s signature ritual: guests eat breakfast in literal silence, a way to begin the day with intention.

Some suites preserve their grand old windows and ceiling moldings, making you feel as if you were staying inside a scene from history.

Overlooking Lake Massawippi, Manoir Hovey is a five-star retreat hotel wrapped in the stillness of nature. It is a conversion of a grand mansion that a businessman from the American South used as a summer home more than 200 years ago, and it now has 37 rooms and suites. With a fireplace, a large bathtub, and fine bedding in every room, guests can enjoy the comfort of staying in a warm country retreat. The hotel’s restaurant, Le Hatley, serves French-Canadian cuisine made with local ingredients and offers a tasting menu that changes with the seasons.

Opened in 1977, Spa Eastman is regarded as one of the pioneers of Canada’s wellness culture. The first facility of the Nordik Spa Village brand, which began with the concept of a ‘wellness village,’ it opened in 2005 in Chelsea, Quebec, next to Ottawa. It boasts the largest spa complex in North America, with nine outdoor baths, seven themed saunas, more than twenty indoor and outdoor massage spaces, and four restaurants. Particularly eye-catching are unique features such as the Epsom salt pool, where your body floats on its own as in the Dead Sea, and the Finnish Aufguss sauna, which stimulates all five senses through fragrance, steam, and movement. There are plenty of places to unwind, including outdoor patios and gardens, a Mongolian-style yurt, outdoor campfires, and a music lounge. The friendly communal atmosphere, reminiscent of a country village, combines with the soothing natural setting for a deeply satisfying healing experience.
