Music Loves Travel
Does anyone out there remember the Morffatts, the Canadian boy band of four brothers that was popular in the 1990s? Their heyday is long gone, but a unique music project started by two of them, Clint and Bob, is going strong. The project, launched in 2018, is called Music Travel Love. Its videos feature cover songs recorded in enchanting places around the world, and they regularly draw tens of millions of views. The most recent one was filmed in Sapa, Viet Nam. Against the backdrop of Sapa’s terraced rice fields, Sam Smith’s ‘Stay with Me’ drifts into your ears like a soft breeze, then flutters away into the beautiful scenery.
If Music Could Save the World, Even a Little
Playing For Change began in 2002 with the song ‘Stand by Me.’ The project gathers performances and songs from local musicians in every corner of the world, regardless of their fame, and turns them into what feels like a documentary music video. Watching them, you can’t help but be moved by the goodwill and passion of people trying to heal the world through music. The diverse local cultures and landscapes captured within them also feel like fragments of a journey.
Playing For Change’s most recent work is ‘When The Levee Breaks.’ The song is best known through the cover by the rock group Led Zeppelin, but the original expressed the circumstances of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Sadly, nearly a century later, the abnormal weather caused by global warming keeps unleashing floods. That is why Playing For Change now hopes that people around the world will sing once more, this time for sustainable environmental protection.
*To date, around 1,000 musicians from more than 50 countries have taken part in Playing For Change, from Grammy winners to street bands.
A Nostalgic Travel Video That Made Us Smile Back Then
The retro craze that never seems to cool down recently led to the revival of Cyworld. Watching everyone open their restored photo albums and sink into nostalgia, I suddenly thought of this video. If there is a king of retro travel videos, surely it’s this man, ‘Dancing Matt’!
Matt Harding is an American video game designer who became hugely popular after posting videos to YouTube beginning in 2005 of himself dancing a jig (a traditional Irish folk dance) all around the world. Seeing him unite with all kinds of people through dance at countless destinations around the globe (even in outer space) is a feel-good, touching experience. If a place you’ve actually visited shows up, it’s all the more delightful. Jawed Karim, one of the founders of YouTube, is said to have once named Harding’s ‘Dancing’ video as his favorite.
