Goseong, Gangwon-do, embraces mountains, sea, and forest in equal measure. Experience the full breadth of Goseong’s nature — from a sculpture museum that organically connects with its surroundings, to a multipurpose cultural space grappling with what makes Goseong unique, a beachside café with serene views, and a forest stay perfect for winding down at the end of the day. A trinity of nature, architecture, and art
Bauzium Museum takes its name from a combination of ‘bau,’ the Gangwon-do dialect word for rock, and the ending syllable of ‘museum.’ Offering a sweeping view of Ulsanbawi Rock on Seoraksan Mountain, this specialized sculpture museum lives up to its name by warmly embracing rock formations. Designed by architect Kim Incheol with the surrounding natural landscape in mind, it received an architecture award from the Cultural Space Architecture Association in 2018. From the modern and contemporary sculpture hall showcasing works by Korea’s first generation of sculptors, to the sculpture gallery of director and sculptor Kim Myeongsuk, to an art space that regularly hosts special exhibitions, indoor and outdoor spaces connect organically throughout. Across the 23,000-square-meter grounds, gardens featuring water, stone, grass, and pine trees make for a wonderful stroll.

A multipurpose cultural space grappling with what makes Goseong unique
The Goseong wildfire of spring 2019 left immense damage, traumatizing local residents. Yeom Daehyun, who was born and raised in Goseong, began making outdoor furniture from trees damaged by the fire as a way to overcome the disaster. This effort led him to team up with his sister, a designer, to found Burntood Works. Together, they transformed an old house with a yard near Cheonjin Beach into a local multipurpose cultural space built around an outdoor concept. Sit around the fire pit sipping coffee and gazing into the flames, browse their self-made recycled clothing and furniture, or read curated independent publications as you explore the philosophy behind Burntood Works.

A tranquil forest stay
Nestled in the mountain village of Sampori, Seorojae — meaning ‘a house that welcomes the morning dew’ — lives up to its name, warmly enveloped by hills and forest. Here, in Goseong, where sea, forest, and lake coexist, you can sense the host’s wish for guests to find peaceful rest in the quiet woods. The exposed concrete building, designed with restraint to face the pine and elm trees as if yielding to nature, puts visitors at ease the moment they step inside. Each room comes with a private bath overlooking the forest, and some rooms also feature a sauna and a private garden. For guests who book in advance, the host offers a tea class and an omakase box of six dishes made with fresh ingredients sourced from Sokcho, Goseong, and other local regions.

Silent frames and financiers
This café is a renovation of the old house where the owner’s grandparents once lived. Tacit has transformed the space into a place to view Goseong’s sea from a fresh perspective. Beyond a rectangular picture window facing the sea and a gray stone wall, the deep blue ocean unfolds like a work of art. True to its name — meaning ‘unspoken’ — the café offers a rest that feels almost meditative. Visitors sit on square benches, savoring the atmosphere of the space as they quietly enjoy the café’s popular financiers.

Dining with Seoraksan Mountain close by
This stay-cum-dining space was designed and is run entirely by an architect couple. The four guest rooms, each requiring a year of design work, are decorated with distinct concepts but share the same view of Seoraksan Mountain. The open first-floor dining room also enjoys a stunning outlook. The dining room is open in the evening even to non-guests, serving refined dishes such as aglio e olio made with Goseong salted seeds and pasta with homegrown basil pesto. After a leisurely dinner, guests can gaze up at a sky full of stars from the fire pit zone.

Geojin Port–Hwajinpo Coastal Road
National Route 7 runs the length of Goseong along the East Sea. The coastal road between Geojin Port and Hwajinpo is considered one of the most dynamic coastal drives around. Heading from Geojin Port toward Hwajinpo in particular, the road runs so close to the sea that sea spray can reach the car.
