It retains a laid-back atmosphere where people draw in more people and find comfort in one another. Connections woven like threads fill the gaps that time has left in the city. Meet those who, leaning on these ties, are giving the old downtown a charming new look.

Words Ryu Sunwoo (@sunw_0.o)
Photos Shin Gyucheol (@cozy114)

© Shin Gyucheol

Jazz Club

A New Nightlife Scene in the Old Town : Jazz Club Muddy

© Shin Gyucheol

© Shin Gyucheol

A traditional Korean health tonic shop shaded by a towering zelkova tree, red-brick buildings blanketed in ivy, nostalgic shop signs, and roads running straight in a grid. Yeonghwa-dong, Gunsan’s old downtown, was developed as a base for Japanese exploitation when the port opened in 1899. After liberation, the port and the U.S. military base kept it lively, but it slowly declined as the new city center developed. In 2025, a jazz club boldly opened its doors on a *street where vacant houses and shuttered shops had become increasingly common.

How has a small venue where music pours out at all hours changed the neighborhood’s nights? Take a seat at Jazz Club Muddy and experience a performance charged with the energy and sweat of live music, and you'll find your answer. Muddy distills the background of its owner, Song Seongjin, who studied jazz piano at the Seoul Jazz Academy and built up experience in concert planning. He books the musicians himself, and an important criterion is a distinct sound color rather than genre or name recognition. Another point of pride is the club's sound quality, said to be the only one in Korea capable of producing release-quality live recordings. Muddy's genuine dedication to music has quickly earned it a reputation across Korea's jazz scene.Evening performances are usually held from Thursday to Saturday, and the schedule is reportedly fully booked through the end of the year. The venue is intimate, so you can take in every expression on the musicians’ faces onstage. As the performance goes on, the rising heat bursts out all at once in applause and exclamations the moment the playing ends, It's the kind of moment that lingers in your memory of Gunsan long after the night is over.

@jazzclub_muddy

*The Re/Turning Gunsan project, born of the hope that people would return to the old downtown, began here in 2019. (Laughs) I went through middle school here, but I attended high school in Seoul. I loved music, so after graduating from a foreign language high school I went to Germany to study music, then crossed over to Venice, Italy, where I cooked. After coming back to Seoul, I opened an Italian restaurant 'The bar dopo' in front of the Seoul Arts Center and ran it for ten years. One day my hometown friends asked me down for a drink of soju, and in Gunsan I noticed a new building going up next to Eunpa Lake Park. I thought it would be perfect for outdoor concerts, so I signed a lease right away, moved back to Gunsan, and opened an Italian restaurant, Paradiso Perduto. That was in 2010. For 16 years now, I’ve held a 200-seat concert every spring and fall.

Why did you open a jazz club in Gunsan?

For a long time I kept asking myself, "Why is cultural infrastructure like jazz clubs so concentrated in Seoul in our country?" In Japan, even the countryside has clubs with shows every day. I really wanted to open a jazz club outside the capital, and ideally somewhere remote where hardly anyone passes. I always pictured a jazz club standing alone with its lights on, on a road without a single footprint on a snowy day. When I was scouring for a location seven years ago, this spot was exactly that.

I understand you led the Re/Turning Gunsan project, and Jazz Club Muddy is its starting point. What role do you hope this space will play in Gunsan going forward?

I think of the whole of Re/Turning Gunsan, Jazz Club Muddy included, as a playground. Good people gather in a good playground, and good relationships grow from there. These days there’s a lot of effort to find national-level solutions to prevent population extinction in the provinces, but I’m convinced that once a region has its own distinctive play culture, people will naturally gather.

In that context, how is the Re/Turning project going?

When we started the project, there were many vacant houses around here. I coaxed my friends, juniors, and acquaintances. I told them not to stay in Seoul but to come next to Re/Turning Gunsan and do the work they were already doing. Eight teams, which we call the 4 Friends group, are now with us. What’s funny is that I was the one who called them to Gunsan, and now those friends are coaxing others. (Laughs) The basis of urban regeneration is people calling people, and that’s exactly how it’s unfolding. It’s fun.

How have Gunsan residents responded?

Eighty percent of the people who come here are locals. They say there are people who’ve never been to Re/Turning Gunsan, but no one who has come only once. Some even say they now have a reason not to leave Gunsan. Since the project is called ‘Re/Turning’ Gunsan, hearing that makes me very happy.

What are Gunsan’s appeal and potential?

I believe Gunsan’s innate DNA is unlike that of any other region in Korea. A hundred years ago, Gunsan didn’t look the way it does today. In 1899 Japan designated this area as an open port and laid out an urban district over the sea and tidal flats in order to plunder rice. Labor was needed, so they gathered people not only from Jeolla, Gyeongsang, and Chungcheong but also from China, Incheon, and North Korea. After liberation, most of them didn’t leave but stayed in Gunsan. In other words, it became a hometown created by outsiders. To me, Gunsan people have greater cultural receptiveness than those in other cities, and they’re less hostile to outsiders. They’re open. After liberation, U.S. troops were stationed here and the Yeonghwa-dong area became a garrison zone. The music and fashion that came in through the American clubs had a big influence on this neighborhood. I think this cultural and historical background, unique to Gunsan, is more than enough to appeal to travelers.

What are your plans for the future?

I hope Muddy grows into a jazz club whose sound and performance level can stand up anywhere in the world. I want it to be both the starting point and the center that leads the city’s play culture. Right now, I’m focused on what the Re/Turning Gunsan project, which has only just taken its first steps, will need in order to last another hundred years.

© Shin Gyucheol

Hotel

A Stay That Blends into the Neighborhood: Hotel Ingrid

© Shin Gyucheol

Hotel Ingrid began welcoming travelers in earnest this April. Its rectangular, mustard-colored facade stretches along one side of the Ground Zone, the site of Returning Gunsan, and catches the eye from far away. Ingrid is built mostly from materials that grow more handsome with time. The exterior walls are finished in plaster, and the interiors use stone, wood and metal, so the marks of the years show naturally. The atrium on one side of the building is striking, too. A narrow skylight runs along the center of the ceiling. The architect fell in love with the feeling of rain and snow drifting into the building, so he boldly removed the glass that appeared in the original plans. Inside the guest rooms, the attention to detail extends to even the hinges on the shutters. Some rooms hang vintage chairs and paintings; others have bathrooms finished in the same red tiles as the Ground Zone’s walls. Every room is dressed differently, so there is a pleasure in discovering each one’s details. Rooms with balconies feel especially open thanks to their large windows. Step onto the balcony in the early morning, when the sunlight first appears, and you can watch the neighborhood slowly wake up. Ingrid is closer to a “horizontal hotel.” During your stay, you are free to use the many facilities of Returning Gunsan, including its restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs. Wander around the Ground Zone and your steps naturally lead into the alleys of Yeonghwa-dong. There, you can blend in seamlessly with faded signboards and the homey scenes of residents gathering in twos and threes to chat.

© Shin Gyucheol

+ Nightlife at the Hotel, Bar Ingrid

This bar sits within the Ground Zone. It adjoins the jazz club Muddy, so you can drop in casually after a show, or while relaxing at the hotel, and spend an atmospheric night away from home. It looks brand new, but historical touches are hidden throughout. To preserve the frame of a Japanese colonial-era house built in 1922, the timber was dismantled and reassembled. The long, straight bar counter of solid wood is said to be made from a main beam of the former Bank of Chosen Gunsan branch, built the same year as the main building. Skilled bartenders mix classic and seasonal cocktails.

A Little Italy in Gunsan : Paradiso 90 & Pizzeria Del Campo

© Shin Gyucheol

Leave the hotel, open the glass door of the building on the right side of the Ground Zone, and the clatter of tableware blends with the hum of conversation. Paradiso 90 is run by owner Song Seongjin together with the jazz club Muddy. Here you can taste Italian cuisine infused with more than 20 years of his cooking experience. Chef Ban Seokhyeon, who worked with him for 10 years at Paradiso Perduto in front of Eunpa Lake Park, joined to lead the kitchen. Popular dishes include the pastrami and brie sandwich on house-made ciabatta, an oil-based seafood pasta, and cicchetti sarde, a Venetian-style sardine bruschetta.

On the right side of the restaurant is Pizzeria Del Campo, whose kitchen is run by a longtime friend of Song’s. While preparing Returning Gunsan, Song urged Manager Son Jina, who ran the pizza restaurant Trevia in Itaewon, Seoul, to come to Gunsan. She closed the shop she had run for about 15 years and made a new nest here. Son’s nickname is “dough master” and “dough artisan,” a title that fits her background: she studied at the Italian culinary school ICIF, then at the Rome pizza school A Tavola con lo Chef. At Del Campo, the dough is the heart of the pizza. Using almost no yeast, the kitchen ferments the flour dough for 72 hours, producing pizza that is easy to digest and moist. You can taste three kinds of pizza, each with its own dough aging and baking method: the round Italian tonda, the Roman-style long, paddle-shaped pala, and the Milanese-style rectangular teglie. Wherever you take a seat, at Paradiso 90 or Pizzeria Del Campo, you can order from both menus at the same table.

@paradiso90_delcampo

© Shin Gyucheol

© Shin Gyucheol

Cultural Space

Where Time Begins to Move Again : Gunsan Hoegwan & Graphic Shop

© Shin Gyucheol

Just beyond Yeonghwa-dong, in the neighboring district, others are seeking change too. A space open to everyone: that is how you might describe Gunsan Hoegwan in a single sentence. It welcomes all who come, from children to pets, without barriers. Its predecessor was the Gunsan Citizens’ Culture Center. Anyone from Gunsan has at least one photo taken in front of this building, and the place holds layer upon layer of the citizens’ memories. Since opening in 1989, it served as the city’s cultural hub, but it closed in 2013 because of the building’s age and the construction of the new Gunsan Arts Center. The change for this space, vacant for more than 10 years, began when the private company Connect Gunsan took over its operation. Without harming the architectural value of the building, the last work designed by architect Kim Chung-up while he was ill, the company added an elevator to improve access and transformed the atmosphere with cozy interiors. In August 2025, Gunsan Hoegwan returned to the citizens’ embrace.

Enter through the front entrance of Gunsan Hoegwan and you are greeted by a café run by Bean Brothers, the parent company of Connect Gunsan. Neoreun Hall lies at the back, and if you climb one floor up the spiral staircase, you reach the Graphic Shop and an open lounge. Neoreun Hall, originally a performance venue, is used for a variety of events. When nothing special is scheduled, it operates as a listening space, with beanbags placed on the stage for visitors to rest comfortably. Local events and programs, such as the Gunsan Book Fair and Toyojang (Saturday market), are also held here.

© Shin Gyucheol

Gunsan Hoegwan also actively publishes works that capture Gunsan through fresh eyes, in partnership with local publishers, cultural planning companies, and other organizations. Graphic Shop is one of the places taking part. It is an art book store run by Kim Gwangcheol, head of the publisher Propaganda. It opened in 2023 across from Returning Gunsan and moved to Gunsan Hoegwan this March. The shop curates books on design, film, and art, with a focus on architecture. “From the moment I decided to come to Gunsan, I knew I wanted to run an art bookstore. It’s hard for this kind of bookstore to survive outside the capital region. Still, I thought it would be nice to have at least one. In terms of diversity, it’s better to have a bookstore with a different character.” Now in his fifth year since leaving Seoul for Gunsan, Kim says his local activities keep growing. He is helping, one thread at a time, to weave a cultural fabric this city didn’t have before. Beyond discovering and publishing local content, he has organized the Gunsan Chaekmunhwa Baljeonso (Gunsan Book Culture Power Plant), a network of local bookstores, and has hosted the Gunsan Book Fair since 2024.

@commonzfield_gunsan, @propaganda_publishers

© Shin Gyucheol

Café

A Fresh Take on a Local Specialty : Boridang Cafe

© Shin Gyucheol

Walk from Yeonghwa-dong toward Sinheung-dong, and low houses and buildings, none taller than two stories, line both sides of the road. Pass Hirotsu House, the best-known Japanese-style house in Sinheung-dong, and at the end of the alley you will come to the private-house stay Soseol Yeohaeng. Right next door is Boridang Cafe, opened by Heo Seunghui, who runs Soseol Yeohaeng. Born and raised in Daegu, she first set foot in Gunsan by following her aunt, an artist who majored in sculpture. Her aunt asked her to help run the stay, and she came with a light heart, only to fall for the neighborhood. Eight years later, she is still here. “I like that I can walk to bookstores and cafés, and shop at the neighborhood butcher or the market instead of a big supermarket. The people here share a similar vibe. Many of them aren’t greedy for much and find small pleasures in everyday life. The people my age who run shops are close, too. It’s a small city, but it’s colorful.” While preparing to start her own business, she noticed that guests at the stay were curious about Gunsan’s local specialties. That led her to launch Boridang, a brand built around white glutinous barley, and open Boridang Cafe. She makes a range of products, including barley coffee drip bags, blended tea bags, and Milk Barley, a milk tea base, while the café serves tea and coffee.

The signature drink is the barley coffee. Barley and coffee beans are roasted separately, then blended and hand-dripped. The barley milk tea is another drink you can find only here: it’s topped with white glutinous barley that turns chewy when cooked, and cold-brewed with assorted grains and persimmon leaf tea. The interior is small, with about five tables, but perhaps thanks to the eye of Heo, who majored in interior design, it is a cozy and comfortable place to rest for a while.

@bori.dang

© Shin Gyucheol

Bar

A Cocktail Bar That Gently Seeps into Your Senses: Haemoo

After sunset, reality and imagination, the familiar and the strange, blend together in Yeonghwa-dong. The cocktail bar Haemoo (Sea Fog) is a place where the blurry line between past and present grows even hazier. Low-flowing music, a scent that seems cut off from the outside world, lighting dim enough to hide your face. The moment you step into Haemoo, located inside Yeonghwa Town, it feels as if you have walked onto a cozy, quietly staged set. Yeonghwa-dong and Wolmyeong-dong have an unusually large number of cocktail bars because, after the Korean War, a commercial district catering to US soldiers formed in this area, and American-style pub culture still lingers. Young bartenders who trained under the older generation are carrying that culture on. Choi Yunseong, who runs Haemoo, drew on his experience working part-time at a cocktail bar during college and opened a bar of his own in 2019.

At Haemoo, you can order classic cocktails, as well as drinks that aren’t on the menu, made to your taste. Among the signature cocktails are Sagwanamu Podo Yeollyeotne (“The Apple Tree Bore Grapes”), which brings out the bright acidity of green apple and green grape, and Richigetta, which blends bittersweet notes with the aroma of lychee. Also popular is the Basil Smash, a fragrant basil-based drink topped with a glazed cherry tomato. The objects decorating every corner of the bar, including movie posters, photographs, LPs, and books, offer a glimpse of the owner’s tastes. Interested in music, he has invited singers to perform at the bar, and lately he has been studying perfumery with the idea of creating a signature scent for Haemoo. As you hold on to the end of the day and slowly empty your glass, the easygoing atmosphere of a Gunsan night seeps into your heart.

@haemoo_seafog

Interview with Choi Yunseong, Owner of Haemoo

Are you from Gunsan?

I’m not originally from Gunsan, but I moved here quite a while ago. I was born in Jangsu, Jeollabuk-do, and grew up walking through rice paddies and fields. In high school, I was determined to go to a city, but I didn’t have the courage to go to Seoul. There was a university in Gunsan I wanted to attend, so that’s how I came to this city. It’s my 17th year now. I majored in visual design in college. After graduating, I got a job and lived in another region for a short while, but I eventually came back to Gunsan.

What led you to open Haemoo?

Since I was young, I’ve wanted to create a space of my own. I signed the lease before I had any concrete plan. In college, I worked part-time at a cocktail bar for quite a long time. While thinking about what to do, I decided to draw on that experience and try making cocktails.

I’m curious about the meaning behind the name.

Haemoo means sea fog. When I first came to Gunsan, Yeonghwa-dong was a neighborhood where only elderly people lived. Apart from Leeseongdang, there were no well-known tourist attractions either. Back then, I often walked around Yeonghwa-dong on foggy days. That fog carried a really strong smell of the sea, salty and a little fishy. I grew up in the countryside near mountains, where fog on a mountain feels moist, clear, and refreshing. Gunsan’s fog feels fishy and clammy, and it hangs really thick. That fog suited the neighborhood’s lonely mood so well. I thought that if I ever had a space of my own, I would give it a name related to fog. Locals told me that the fog rises from the sea right next to Yeonghwa-dong and rolls inland, which is why it smells of salt.

What does a day at Haemoo look like?

I usually arrive right at opening time. These days, there are customers the moment we open, so I prepare in a bit of a rush. As Gunsan has become known as a good place to travel alone, more first-time visitors have been coming. Once I get busy, it’s suddenly 9 or 10 p.m. I’d love to make eye contact with customers and chat at a relaxed pace, but I’m so busy working that I lose track of time. After 11 p.m., people who run businesses nearby come in after closing. When familiar faces show up, I spend the rest of the night feeling more at ease.

What is life like in Gunsan?

There are still so many neighborhoods and alleyways I haven’t explored, so the city still feels new to me. Lots of great spaces have opened in Gunsan lately, which makes it even more fun and interesting. During the day, I often go to Trevia, which opened in Returning Gunsan. I also stop by Gunsan Hoegwan from time to time. The sound is good, so it’s a nice place to work calmly while listening to music. In August, I go to the Gunsan Book Fair. I used to be a designer, so I need to visit places like that to wake up my senses. (Laughs)

What kinds of cocktails can people try at Haemu?

There is a menu, but what’s on it are common cocktails that everyone knows. Honestly, I don’t really want people to order those. For guests who don’t know much about cocktails, I usually recommend something that isn’t on the menu. When I meet a demanding guest, I sometimes make an experimental cocktail, and those moments are actually more fun. Some people even ask, “Make me a cocktail that captures how I felt traveling around Gunsan.” (Laughs)

What are you most interested in these days?

I’ve been traveling back and forth to Seoul to take a perfumery class. Gunsan is comfortable and a good place to live, but I wish it had more of that kind of infrastructure.

Hotel

@bori.dang

@haemoo_seafog

Interview with 해무 17년 차예요.

(Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary)의 제단처럼 수백 년간의 고요가 스며든 자리들이 그렇다.

스르지산 전망대 emerald Adriatic waves crash against Croatia’s ancient walls in a spray of white foam and the sky slowly fills with sunset color, Dubrovnik’s old town steals the traveler’s heart.

Words & Photos Hur Taewoo
In collaboration with Croatian National Tourist Board (CNTB)

Dubrovnik

A view of Dubrovnik’s old town
© Hur Taewoo

The area around Pile Gate is bound to be crowded from early morning. Tour buses and Ubers unload people without pause, and visitors from all over the world get ready to enter the Walls of Old Town. The plane trees in Brsalje Square, just outside the gate, seem used to the sight. They shake as many leaves as there are visitors, gently scattering the glaring sunlight. Trace the etymology of Dubrovnik and you find “city of the oak forest,” but that must be a very old picture. Now the dominant scenery around the old town is its sturdy limestone walls, its fortresses, and the waves of the Adriatic.
Dubrovnik, in the south of Dalmatia, has long been the Adriatic’s trading hub linking the Balkans with Western Europe. Silver, beeswax, and other goods produced in the Balkan interior passed through here and went by sea to Italy, while textiles and crafts from Western Europe were distributed eastward. The Slavs of the Balkans called it Dubrovnik, while the Italians called it Ragusa. The Republic of Ragusa, which won its independence from Venice in 1358, grew into a trading power in the 15th and 16th centuries, when Mediterranean commerce flourished. But the glory of the small state did not last long. Weakened by the 1667 earthquake and changing trade patterns, the Republic of Ragusa was abolished under French rule in 1808. Dubrovnik’s history continued through the wars and political upheavals that followed.

The morning market in Gundulić Square in the old town
© Hur Taewoo

In Dubrovnik’s old town, the everyday life of locals carries on as it always has.
© Hur Taewoo

The best way to absorb the charm of Dubrovnik’s old town is to wander it on foot all day (though with ordinary vehicles barred from entering, there is no alternative anyway). The moment you step through Pile Gate, Baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic
buildings, narrow alleys, and red roofs unfold on both sides of the main street, Stradun, like a stage set. The walls, which withstood both the great earthquake and the shelling of the 1991 war of independence, have been preserved almost in their original form, while palaces and churches have been carefully restored to faithfully recreate the past. From 10 a.m., when groups of travelers, including cruise passengers, pour in, until the early afternoon is the old town’s peak time. The crowds lining the streets and walls prove its status as a world-famous destination. Looking down from Minčeta Tower, the highest point on the walls, I can’t help thinking that Dubrovnik’s golden age is now. About 1,500 residents live inside the walls, yet as of 2025 annual visitors top 2.5 million. You need patience to snap even a single souvenir photo in the midst of it. Still, there are places where you can forget the bustle and indulge in history itself: the cloister of the Franciscan Monastery and Church, the courtyard of the Rector’s Palace, the altar of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, all places steeped in centuries of stillness.

Franciscan Monastery and Church
© Hur Taewoo

Church of St. Ignatius
© Hur Taewoo

The Franciscan Monastery and Church holds more than 700 years of history. The displays include objects once used by the friars and artifacts associated with Dubrovnik’s nobility, and its Mala Braća Pharmacy (Ljekarna Mala Braća), which opened in 1317, is one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe. The Rector’s Palace, once the residence and office of the Republic of Ragusa’s rector, is now a museum holding some 20,000 historical artifacts from the 15th to the early 20th century. Inside the building, which blends Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, its rooms, dungeon, and courtroom have been preserved intact. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was rebuilt in the Roman Baroque style in 1713 on the site of a 12th-century church. It houses historically important religious relics, and the large altarpiece behind the main altar in particular is believed to be the work of Titian.

Fort Lovrijenac, the Rector’s Palace, and a small beach in the old town © Hur Taewoo

The small pleasures you stumble upon in Dubrovnik are worth praising, too. Stalls open at the little local market in Gundulić Square, and children’s laughter rings out from playgrounds and basketball courts. Turn your head as you walk the walls and you may see laundry fluttering outside the window of a modest home. Life flowing as naturally as breathing amid the evidence of history: isn’t that the true heart of Dubrovnik that travelers should feel? In the late afternoon, once the tourists have left, not only Stradun but also Fort
Lovrijenac, west of the walls, grows quiet. Completed in the 15th century, Fort Lovrijenac was responsible for defending the city against the Republic of Venice. Perched atop a cliff about 37 meters above sea level, it offers a sweeping view of the Adriatic and all of Dubrovnik, and it is also famous as a filming location for the drama “Game of Thrones.” Time your visit and head to the fort for the sunset that symbolizes the Adriatic. The sea breeze and the sunset’s red glow across the deep-blue water make a fitting farewell to Dubrovnik.

To See

Dubrovnik’s old town seen from the Srđ Mountain viewpoint
© Hur Taewoo

Srđ Mountain Viewpoint
Ride the Dubrovnik cable car for five minutes to the viewpoint on Srđ Mountain and you can take in the entire old town.

A Space of Inspiration Wrapped in Green Leaves — Micro Garden Studio

Lyricist Cho Donghui, whose lyrical words comfort so many listeners, has opened a small plant space in Seoul’s Yeonhui-dong. We visited to hear about the plants, music and travels she loves.

Interviewee Cho Donghui

Interviewer Ryu Sunwoo

© Pitch by Pitch

What kind of place is Micro Garden Stuido?

Our slogan is “A botanical garden by day, a cultural center by night.” During the day we sell plants, and in the evening we hold lyric-writing classes.

Does the name carry a special meaning?

I took “choeso” (minimum) from Choeso Uju (Minimum Universe), the label I run. The word carries my thoughts on sustainability. These days everything is about being faster and bigger. But I wondered, can I actually keep up with that? Could it be sustainable? After working in music for so long and watching so many rises and falls, sustainability and irreplaceability became important values in my life. When something gets smaller, it gets more substantial. I wanted to live a life that is small yet full. I chose the name hoping everyone could create a minimal botanical garden on their own desk. In “Choeso Uju,” the “universe” means a person. I believe each of us is a small but complete universe. It also means that people, each with their own universe, meet and form relationships.

You’ve long worked as a musician and lyricist. What led you to open a space centered on plants?

While working in music, I sometimes grew sensitive, and bouts of depression came often. I had always liked plants, but I only started growing them in earnest, one by one, after my children were grown. Eventually there were so many that not only my home but also my studio in Seochon was packed, with no place left to sit. (Laughs) Passersby would come in to buy plants, and friends asked me to hold a plant pop-up store, so I tried selling a few times. That led to my being asked to do the plant styling for BTS V’s home. Through that work, I saw for myself that plants bring people joy and happiness. My studio was already overflowing, so I went looking for a space with a large terrace and opened Micro Garden Stuido in Yeonhui-dong.

© Pitch by Pitch

Was there a particular reason you came to love plants?

My father loved plants, so our home had many of them from the time I was little. He always wiped the leaves until they gleamed. As a child I didn’t understand it, but the calm that green gave me stayed in a corner of my heart. Then I visited my niece’s home in the United States, where she works in landscaping, and my interest in plants returned. She would pick roses from the yard and place them by my pillow before bed, and it made me so happy. Tending plants in the morning sun and making salads from vegetables harvested in the yard looked so healthy and happy. I thought, “This is what living is.”

After I came home, I started bringing in new trees, but they kept dying. I studied on my own by watching videos and eventually earned a horticulture certification. Watching new leaves sprout from a dying tree that was nothing but stems, I was completely captivated. I got hooked on the dopamine of new leaves. (Laughs) Just looking at plants makes me so happy. You start looking forward to each day, and you feel grateful for the season and the weather, whether it rains or the sun shines. The same goes for time. No matter how diligently you give a plant fertilizer, it only grows once time has passed. Through that process I came to reflect more and to feel the seasons as they are, and I felt so much happiness that there was hardly room for even a little depression.

Every plant grows at its own pace and blooms in its own season. After watching plants for so long, has your attitude toward life changed?

It has changed a great deal. Look around here: the plants differ in size, color and shape. Even their blooming seasons vary. I think people are the same. My attitude of accepting that everyone is different has become firmer. Even a tree left with only bare branches, if you don’t throw it away and wait, will meet enough light, water and wind to put out new leaves someday. In my song “To Time,” there’s a line, ‘Only time gave the answer.’ I think I’ve come to accept that some things happen only if you wait, only once time has passed.

What plants can visitors find at Micro Garden Stuido?

There are many plants from the aroid family, like anthuriums and alocasias, which I love. Many are rare plants that are hard to find at ordinary flower shops, but I try to offer them at reasonable prices of around 100,000 won. Some people want to give an uncommon plant as a gift, so I also carefully prepare everything from the soil to the pot and send it for them. Above all, I consider a plant’s form important, so I pay a lot of attention to shaping and trimming. Recently I’ve also become interested in asparagus varieties.

You’ve been writing lyrics for a long time. Where do you mainly find inspiration these days?

It’s one of the questions I’ve been asked most as a lyricist. I used to answer that I get it from people or books, but now I say you have to get it from everywhere. You should be able to write something just by looking at a single plant beside you. I use similar exercises in my lyric-writing classes. I ask students to talk to a plant or write it a letter. At first they’re baffled, but in the end everyone writes something. When you observe closely, a different part of your heart is touched. It’s training your heart to feel whatever you see. Even a bad experience seems meaningful, because painful experiences also temper and grow us.

© Pitch by Pitch

I hear you also teach lyric-writing classes in this space.

At first I ran only a beginner class for ordinary people interested in lyrics as a hobby. But people who finished it asked, “Where do we go from here?” (Laughs) So I created an advanced class where they set their own lyrics to music and even record them. Some people truly want to become lyricists, so I opened a pro class as well. It’s the first cohort now, and we do everything from dividing syllables to writing lyrics together for songs I’ve been commissioned to write. Teaching in a space full of plants means the air is good, so your head clears and your mind settles. There’s also so much to observe, which makes it even better.

Your photo essay book “What Remains as We Sway,” published last month, collects photos you took on film cameras over many years, along with your writing. Is there a landscape or scene that stays with you in particular?

The book contains film photos I took over two to three years. I shot a lot of them on Jeju Island. I’d pick the photos that capture real scenery and its shadow in a single frame, and the ones I took at the home of a teacher I admire. She’s a master of haenyeo (female diver) cuisine on Jeju, and I love her dearly. I also really like the photo that holds komorebi, a Japanese word for sunlight filtering through tree leaves.

© Pitch by Pitch

Do you have a favorite travel destination?

I really love India and have traveled there about five times. In the south there’s a place called Auroville. Its French founder created it dreaming of an ideal community, and I once stayed in a coastal city called Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) in order to go there. I have such fond memories of cycling around its museums and galleries. I enjoyed the contrast of feeling as if I’d stepped into a fairy tale, then heading downtown to find a sophisticated scene, but above all, your prejudices disappear. I was truly shocked when I went to the Ganges in Varanasi. Corpses and water buffalo carcasses drift by, and birds peck at them, yet right beside them people are bathing, brushing their teeth and praying. All of that happens in a single river. At first I was horrified, but strangely it was peaceful too. To them, that river is the sacred Mother River. Seeing that, I began to wonder whether the things I took for granted were really right. Time seemed to flow differently there, and the very standard by which I viewed the world shifted, and my mind opened up.

I’m also curious whether you have your own way of traveling with plants or music, Donghui.

I used to head straight for the music shops whenever I traveled. During about forty days in India, I learned traditional instruments like the sitar and the sarod, and I went to concerts with my teachers. I also loved playing and singing with people I met along the way. In the Thar Desert in India and in the Moroccan desert, I played and sang together with the people there. In Kolkata, India, I volunteered at the Mother House of Mother Teresa’s sisters, where I taught children with disabilities how to play guitar and wrote songs with them. That was when I realized music could be a gift to someone. Music makes it easy to get close to people quickly. These days, when I travel, the first thing I search for is a botanical garden. (Laughs) Even in Tokyo, I go around looking for botanical gardens and plant shops. Since I can’t bring plants home, I buy unusual pots and plant supplies instead.

What kind of place do you hope Micro Garden Studio will become? In British Columbia, salmon caught in the Fraser River, the Columbia River and along the Pacific coast have long been a vital ingredient, while in Nova Scotia on the Atlantic coast, fresh seafood such as lobster and king crab counts as a prized delicacy. Dishes that blend French culinary traditions with local ingredients are part of Quebec’s unique appeal. Poutine, which is french fries topped with cheese curds and gravy, and Montreal bagels, sprinkled with sesame or poppy seeds and baked in a wood-fired oven, are also must-tries. The Prairies, which take in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, have a well-developed agricultural sector and abundant meat and grain. Eastern Canada is the world’s largest source of maple syrup, producing more than 70 percent of the global supply, and its pure, rich sweetness comes straight from nature.

From Indigenous Cuisine to Fine Dining

© Destination Ontario/Ryan Lee

© Destination Ontario/Daniel Neuhaus

Indigenous cuisine, which has developed in harmony with nature, is one of the key elements of Canada’s food culture. It is characterized by ingredients taken from the land and water, from salmon to moose, venison and wild berries, and in recent years it has also drawn attention as a sustainable food culture that takes health and the environment into account. Traditional foods you may encounter while traveling in Canada, such as bannock, a traditional bread, and pemmican, a preserved food made by mixing dried meat with berries, will make for a distinctive experience.
Meanwhile, Toronto and Vancouver have in recent years been added to the Michelin Guide one after the other, emerging as world-class culinary destinations. Centered on these cities, you can enjoy fine dining built around locality, sustainability and multiculturalism in many other places, including Montreal, Quebec City, Calgary, Ottawa and Halifax.

Wine and Drinking Culture

© Destination Ontario/Ryan Lee

The Okanagan Valley in British Columbia and the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario are Canada’s leading wine regions. The Niagara Peninsula is especially famous as the world’s largest producer of icewine. Original, distinctive wines from small boutique wineries are also drawing more and more attention. Craft beer culture is booming as well, with about 1,350 breweries across Canada. In Vancouver and Toronto in particular, small independent breweries with their own character are easy to find. Wine lovers may want to plan a half-day or full-day winery tour, and beer lovers a brewery tour. A wide range of spirits and ciders made from regional produce, including whisky, gin and vodka, also delight travelers who love good food and drink.

Canada’s Culinary Routes You Shouldn’t Miss

British Columbia
British Columbia

© Thompson Okanagan/Eric Simard

Okanagan Valley Wine Route
In the Okanagan Valley, vineyards stretch along the gently rolling hills around vast Okanagan Lake, making it one of Canada’s leading wine regions. More than 200 wineries are located here, producing a wide range of wines, from reds and whites to rosés and natural wines. Among them, Kelowna is the gateway and hub of the Okanagan wine region, and a good base for traveling along self-guided wine routes. There are options to suit every schedule and taste: the Southeast Kelowna Bench, which takes in small boutique wineries on the hilltops; the Lakeshore Wine Trail, which follows the lake to well-established wineries; Downtown Grapes & Grains, where you can visit craft breweries and cider houses along with wineries; the Westside Wine Trail, with historic family-run wineries and old vines; and Lake Country’s Scenic Sip, which leads to wineries on the north side of the valley with spectacular views.

Ontario
Ontario

© Destination Ontario/Blue Mountain Village Association

Apple Pie Trail
More than 40 percent of Canada’s apples are grown in Ontario. Dishes made with the region’s richly sweet apples have developed too, and apple pie is one of them. During the apple harvest season, you can find apple pie almost anywhere in Ontario. South Georgian Bay, about 90 minutes by car from Toronto, is one of Ontario’s main apple-growing areas and is known for its Apple Pie Trail, where you can experience orchards, cideries and apple pie all in one route. Traveling through the Town of the Blue Mountains, Meaford, Beaver Valley and more, you can pick your own apples, taste handcrafted cider and enjoy apple desserts including apple pie. Visiting craft markets and galleries and dining at farm-to-table restaurants, you can experience a journey where local art and cuisine come together. Outdoor activities can be added too, such as kayaking and canoeing in spring and summer, hiking in fall and snowshoeing in winter, so the trip offers a different charm in every season.

© Destination Ontario/Blue Mountain Village Association

Butter Tart Tour
For dessert lovers with a taste for rich sweetness, a butter tart tour is just the thing. The butter tart is a signature Canadian pastry, made by filling pie dough with a mixture of butter, sugar, eggs and syrup and baking it. Around 40 cafés and bakeries are located in and around Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland County, about an hour and a half by car from Toronto, so you can sample butter tarts made from a wide variety of recipes.

Alberta
Alberta

© Government of Alberta

Calgary & Edmonton Wine Route
Alberta is known not for traditional grape wine but for fruit wines and honey mead. The Calgary & Edmonton Wine Route is the best way to enjoy these local bottles. The journey takes you to small wineries that turn local produce such as raspberries, cherries, apples, blackcurrants and peaches into distinctive wines, and to tastings of mead, the traditional honey wine made by fermenting honey. It is a chance to savor Alberta’s nature and cuisine. Centered on the two cities of Calgary and Edmonton, the route lets you tour nearby wineries and also try a range of activities, from harvesting crops to farm tours. We recommend adding a picnic to your itinerary in summer and timing your trip to the festivals and events of autumn.

© Travel Alberta

Hot Chocolate Trail
Every winter, restaurants and cafés in the Banff and Lake Louise area roll out seasonal, limited-edition hot chocolate menus. The trail usually runs from mid-November to the end of December, with 20 to 30 venues taking part. Visitors to Banff and Lake Louise during this period can build their own route of tastings, sampling hot chocolates of every kind. You can also keep the journey going by exploring the shops and galleries within walking distance.

Quebec Province
Quebec

© GouvQc/Michel Paquet

© GouvQc/Mathieu Dupuis

Cheese Trail
You can taste countless kinds of artisan cheese across Canada, but the cheeses of Quebec Province are widely considered the finest. On this road trip, you can sample some 500 cheeses amid pastoral countryside, meet local producers and experience the true flavors of Quebec. Workshops that make cheese in the traditional way are scattered across the province, in places such as the Eastern Townships, Charlevoix and Baie-Saint-Paul, where you can tour, taste and buy at any time. After meeting cheesemakers, learning how traditional cheese is made and trying a variety of handmade cheeses, you can return to Quebec City to continue your culinary adventure. A perfect way to end the journey is at the 1608 Wine & Cheese Bar, overlooking the St. Lawrence River, with a pairing of top-quality wine and premium Quebec cheese.

Soaring Over Danyang — Cafe Sann

Perched on a ridge in Dusan Village, Danyang, Cafe San combines paragliding, a cafe, and sweeping views. Here, you can set your thoughts aside for a moment, lay them down on the lawn, and watch the sun go down. The view is shared by everyone, regardless of age, race, or nationality, and it makes you think about the spirit in which we should live on this planet. The moments you share here with the people you love also tend to stay with you for a long time, under the names of life, happiness, and family. I work to share that experience with as many people as possible.

What led you to settle in Dusan Village in Danyang?
Dusan Village is blessed with a natural environment so favorable that more than 300 days a year are suitable for flying. You could call it one of the world’s leading paragliding hubs. Mountain slopes that are ideal for *ridge flying and a beautifully flowing river blend into the picture-perfect village. It’s said that wheat, barley, and other crops were grown here long ago, and that potato fields were cultivated later on. Even in the 1970s, at the height of the slash-and-burn field clearance program, residents grew tobacco here to support their children. Pilot Jang Seonyeong, the founder of Cafe San, first discovered Dusan Village in 1991. He was overwhelmed by this nameless village, which had no roads and no signs. He joined forces with a handful of fellow fliers, cut a road through the barren fields, and founded a paragliding school. That was the beginning of Cafe San.
*A flying method that uses the updrafts rising along a mountain ridge

Dusan Village is now called a center of paragliding. What makes it so appealing as a paragliding spot?
Is there anywhere else in the world where you can take in, from the sky, the Namhangang River running through Danyang, a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the grand sweep of the Sobaek Mountains, with ridge after ridge rolling on?

I heard that you’re a paragliding pilot. When did you first encounter paragliding?
The pilot who founded Cafe San was a big influence. I learned to fly from him.

Is there a special reason you run a paragliding experience site and a cafe together?
At the time, tandem paragliding, in which a professional pilot flies with an ordinary person, was unfamiliar in Korea, and there was no system of regulations or insurance in place to turn it into a business. We visited the local government to explain why a launch site was needed, and we worked with insurers to create the insurance product that tandem flights required. We also negotiated the relevant procedures with the Seoul Regional Aviation Administration, which gave us the foundation to operate a tandem flight business legally. It was like climbing a mountain, making the path one step at a time.
And that wasn’t the end of it. In the 2010s, as visitors began to increase in earnest, our infrastructure fell short. We had far too few pilots for the number of guests, and the waiting area was poor, so guests had to wait for long stretches under the scorching sun. Hundreds of cars came and went on the narrow village road every day, which led to conflicts with residents. For a sustainable future, we needed a place to pause and think. After much deliberation, we opened Cafe San, a third space where people can soothe one another’s short and long hours with the language of coffee.

© Cafe San

© Cafe San

How does the paragliding experience at Cafe San work? Do you have any tips for first-timers?
Because a veteran pilot flies with you, anyone from a five-year-old to a senior can try it easily. If you follow the pilot’s instructions, the flight is safe. You can enjoy beautiful scenery all day, but we recommend flying between noon and 3 p.m., when the wind direction and strength are most stable. Near sunset the sky is beautiful, but the wind shifts, and flying conditions are actually worse.

Is there a season or time of day you’d recommend?
I recommend autumn! Compared with other seasons, there are more updrafts and more days with stable flying conditions, so it’s a great season for paragliding. It’s also the perfect time to take in fallen leaves as colorful as fruit, ripening grain, and the warm sunshine.

I heard that the ingredients for the cafe and bakery come from the Danyang area. Could you briefly introduce what you sell?
Dusan Village has long grown potatoes in the fertile soil of its highlands. Potatoes grown at high elevation in well-drained soil are known for their fluffy texture and mild flavor. Our potato bread and potato baguettes, made with Danyang potatoes, are hugely popular with visitors.

You upcycle retired paraglider fabric into new products. What inspired this project?
In Danyang alone, as many as 150,000 people try paragliding every year. Nationwide, the number exceeds 200,000. For safe flights, pilots replace their paraglider equipment, especially the canopy, every year. With repeated flights, the gear wears down little by little, and exposure to UV rays and dirt shortens its service life. In the process, hundreds of wings are discarded every year. Disposing of that much waste is no small task, so we began to approach it from a different angle. A canopy that no longer meets flight safety standards, such as air permeability, still has value and beauty. Using them, we started with small pouches and now make a range of lifestyle products, including backpacks and camping chairs.

© Cafe San

© Cafe San

Which brands have you collaborated with so far, and what products have you made? Are there any collaborations or products that stand out in particular?
The first brand we collaborated with was RAWROW. Its way of looking at travel and the direction it aims for matched Cafe San well, and we were able to produce highly polished results from the very first collection. Since then we have also done a collection every year with Mother Ground. Mother Ground, too, develops sustainable design with an emphasis on leaving ‘good footprints.’*

*Cafe San also steadily carries out projects making bags and lifestyle products from paraglider fabric, collaborating with other brands such as Zerogram and H22.

What does the tourism industry that makes use of the natural environment need in order to coexist harmoniously with nature?
We call ourselves ‘sky farmers.’ Just as a rice farmer waits for the spring rain and prays for a good harvest, we pray that the sky will send us a gift and that we can harvest our flights by following good winds. I believe that flying with a mind that yields to nature is the safest way, and the way we can keep flying for a long time.

© Cafe San

© Cafe San

Is there a place you’d recommend to visitors to Danyang?
Danyang has many geological sites that carry the marks of time. I’d recommend *Gosu Cave and **Dodamsambong. Dodamsambong is an unmatched spot for feeling a literary charm. Guinsa Temple, about 30 minutes by car from Cafe San, is also one of the places many people visit for its beautiful autumn foliage. I recommend coming to experience the splendid feast of fall colors.

*You can see up close a limestone landscape formed over about 500 million years.

www.ayalamuseum.org

thehubmakelab

To Once a vital trade route, the river inevitably deteriorated amid rapid urbanization. To reverse this, the Philippine government has carried out decades of environmental cleanup efforts since the 1990s, and is now pursuing an even more ambitious initiative: The Pasig River Project. This undertaking aims to develop riverside walkways, bike paths, and public spaces, transforming the Pasig River into a hub of daily life and tourism in Manila. The Pasig River Esplanade, unveiled in late 2025, is one result of this effort. Stretching from Intramuros through the Manila Central Post Office to Arroceros Forest Park, the riverside path features walkways and bike lanes, with streetlamps, railings, and bridges designed in a neoclassical style. Thanks to this, the riverside scenery harmonizes with the architecture of the old town, completing the overall aesthetic.

© Park Shinwoo

© Park Shinwoo

Arroceros Forest Park, located at the end of the esplanade, is nicknamed “Manila's Last Lung.” Spanning just over two hectares, it isn't large, but it serves as a haven where visitors can rest beneath tree shade and listen to birdsong in the midst of a dense downtown. Entering through the guarded entrance feels like stepping into a protruding pocket of tropical forest. More than 3,000 trees—including mahogany, acacia, and banyan—crowd the park so densely they block out even the sunlight trying to filter through. The walkways, carefully maintained to avoid damaging the forest, even include a short skywalk, offering visitors the pleasure of observing the forest's ecology. Office workers quietly reading books on benches during lunch breaks, and students learning about the forest's ecosystem, are common sights.
This modern urban vision of weaving nature into everyday spaces can be experienced once again in the Makati CBD of Metro Manila. Here, Ayala Triangle Garden functions like a green buffer zone surrounded by high-rise buildings. In this park—where lawns, trees, walking paths, public art, and restaurants all come together—locals and travelers naturally share in daily life. Mornings draw those who come to exercise, afternoons bring office workers passing through, and evenings bring the restaurant district to life. A ten-minute walk from here stands Greenbelt, a garden-style mixed-use shopping mall that combines greenery and consumer culture in an even more sophisticated way. Spanning several hectares with 2.8 hectares of gardens, Greenbelt seamlessly connects shopping malls, parks, dining establishments, and cultural spaces. The mall, where the dazzling storefronts of global luxury brands meet lush greenery, feels like a commercial advertisement come to life. The central garden, Greenbelt Park, is even home to the concrete-domed Greenbelt Chapel, creating a unique structure where a religious sanctuary sits at the heart of a commercial space. In the midst of Manila's rapid transformation, these spaces prove why a city needs room to breathe.

Arroceros Forest Park : arrocerosforestparkofficial
Ayala Triangle Garden : www.ayalatriangle.com/gardens

To See

© Park Shinwoo

© Park Shinwoo

Ayala Museum
Ayala Museum
Ayala Museum is a private museum connected to Makati's Greenbelt. Operated by the Ayala Foundation, its founding was proposed in the 1950s by Filipino abstract painter Fernando Zóbel de Ayala. After first opening on Ayala Avenue in 1967, the museum relocated in 2004 to its current six-story modern building. The quality of the museum's collection, covering Philippine history, archaeology, and craftsmanship, exceeds expectations. The exhibition design, which incorporates augmented reality technology, is another compelling element. The most striking feature is a series of 60 dioramas depicting major events in Philippine history. Created through the collaborative effort of the museum's historians, curators, artists, and woodcarving artisans from Paete in Laguna province, this work has become the museum's signature exhibit since it was first unveiled 50 years ago. Also notable is the “Gold of Ancestors” exhibit, showcasing pre-Spanish Philippine goldwork artifacts that reveal the pinnacle of delicate craftsmanship.

Admission 650 pesos, www.ayalamuseum.org

© Park Shinwoo

HUB Make Lab
HUB Make Lab, located on Escolta Street in Manila, is a local cultural complex. Escolta was once a thriving commercial district before Makati's development, home to department stores, shops, banks, and the stock exchange. HUB Make Lab occupies the First United Building, a department store completed on Escolta in 1928, reviving the shuttered store as a space for creators. It is run together by Roberto, son of the building's original owner Sy Lian Teng, along with Roberto's wife Lorraine Young and their son Robby. Lorraine explains the reason behind starting HUB Make Lab: “My daughter, who lives in Brooklyn, New York, told me, ‘Mom, if you create a space for artists to gather, you can bring the street back to life.’” On the mezzanine level of the building (between the first and second floors), they've also created a small community museum. It's a space dedicated to honoring the Sy Lian Teng family, who acquired the building after World War II. Based on Teng's photographs and archives, the museum displays office equipment, household items, and furniture, connecting the commercial heritage of the past with the experimental cultural space of the present.

thehubmakelab

To Stay

© Park Shinwoo

© Park Shinwoo

The Manila Hotel
Situated between Manila Bay and Rizal Park, this is the Philippines' quintessential heritage hotel. It officially opened on July 4, 1912, and has represented Manila's modern era and high society culture ever since. Politicians, diplomats, and artists from both the Philippines and abroad have stayed here, and thanks to its location right next to Intramuros, it's also a frequent stop for travelers. The moment you step into the grand lobby, with its high ceilings, chandeliers, and antique furnishings, you can feel the hotel's history and character. It features over 500 rooms, a large ballroom, a spa and pool, and even its own museum.

From 7,000 pesos per night, www.manila-hotel.com.ph

©

Solaire Resort Entertainment City
A leading force behind Manila's upscale hospitality culture, this resort sits within a large-scale entertainment district in Metro Manila led by the Philippine government. Spanning 8.3 hectares, the site houses not only hotels but also restaurants, a luxury shopping mall, and a large performance venue, along with an impressive art collection displayed throughout the resort. Among its accommodations, Sky Tower is the signature hotel, offering suite-centric rooms with views of Manila Bay. It has its own dedicated reception and elevators, and has earned five stars from Forbes Travel Guide for ten consecutive years.

From 22,000 pesos per night, sec.solaireresort.com

Interview

Korea

Seoul

Food
