We drove five hours straight from Seoul to reach Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do. With no time to rest, we set up camp facing the sea and strode boldly toward the waves. We also climbed to a mountain summit, coating the car in dust along the way. Throughout this journey with the versatile Porsche Taycan 4 Cross Turismo, we felt as though we'd glimpsed a future of travel.

Daejeon Beach sits in Daejeon-ri, Duwon-myeon, about 13 kilometers northwest of Goheung-eup. Behind its sandy shore, a small campground hides among a pine forest. It's one of the few beaches in Goheung-gun where you can camp quietly right by the water. We set up near a pine tree at the far end of the beach and began preparing for the day's camp. The trunk of the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo held everything—tent, camping chairs, sleeping bags, and all manner of camping gear. After the long drive, a quiet moment awaited us, gazing out at the sea. Looking around, we found ourselves enveloped by a landscape shaped over centuries by wind, rain, and waves, standing like a folding screen around us.

Riding the Clear Waves of the South Sea

We arrive at Namyeol Sunrise Beach, the only notable surf spot in the southern region. The water here is shallow enough to stand in, yet a steady stream of fairly tall waves rolls in, making it ideal for beginners. With no islands blocking the open sea, waves arriving from far offshore are large and clean, earning it a reputation as a surfer's paradise. Folding down the rear seats of the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo leaves plenty of room for surfboards and small gear. For a surf session, all you need to do is wake up, quickly load your equipment, and head to the shore. Then all that's left is to wait for the waves.

The Charm of Off-Road: Cheondeungsan Azalea Park

Goheung is home to many notable mountains, including Paryeongsan, Maboksan, and Unamsan, but Cheondeungsan stands out for its wild-growing azaleas, weathered rock formations shaped over the ages, Sinseondae—where legend says immortals once played baduk—and a signal beacon that once warned of Japanese invasions. From the entrance of Sadong Village on the mountain's eastern side, an unpaved road roughly 7 kilometers long, passable by vehicle, leads up to Azalea Park at an elevation of 400 meters. It's known as the ‘Cheondeungsan Mountain Road.’ We switch to ‘Gravel Mode’ to drive the off-road route, which winds beneath dizzying rock cliffs. In Gravel Mode, the air suspension raises the body of the car. Combined with the off-road design package, ground clearance increases by up to 30 millimeters, allowing smooth driving even on rough terrain. Arriving at last at Azalea Park, Goheung's magnificent mountain scenery unfolds before us like a panorama.

Porsche's first crossover utility vehicle (CUV) and second all-electric model. Like the Taycan, the brand's first all-electric sports car, it features an 800-volt architecture electric drive system. Maximum output is 380 horsepower, with overboost power reaching up to 476 horsepower when Launch Control is engaged. Range on a single charge is 287 kilometers. Rear-seat space and cargo capacity are both generous. Headroom is 47 millimeters higher than the Taycan, and with the rear tailgate utilized, cargo capacity reaches 1,200 liters. Delivering sporty performance across both on-road and off-road conditions, it's an appealing model for outdoor sports like camping, cycling, and surfing.
