A New World of Independent Whisky: Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop

Known as the oldest independent bottler whisky shop in Scotland, Cadenhead’s is a place no whisky lover can simply walk past. Independent bottlers fill limited quantities from specific casks at various distilleries, offering a charm entirely different from the distilleries’ official releases. In the display cases inside the shop, which recall an old apothecary, rare whiskies sourced from distilleries across Scotland fill the shelves, each bearing the Cadenhead’s label, a virtual guarantee of quality. You can ask for recommendations suited to your taste, and the miniatures poured into small glass bottles make perfect gifts. The shop is also distinguished by its well-rounded selection of Campbeltown whiskies, which are hard to find in Korea.

Push open the green-painted door and a vintage-filled scene unfolds, as if you had time-slipped back several centuries. Hung with maps of Europe and Scotland from the 17th to the 20th centuries, the Royal Mile Gallery is no mere souvenir shop. Its vast holdings, from original maps in antique wooden frames to vintage illustrations, posters, and letters, make you feel, true to its name, as though you’re strolling through a gallery. We recommend leaving plenty of time to wander every corner of the shop as if on a treasure hunt. The website introduces products by category, so it’s worth a look before you visit.

Walk down from the Royal Mile and you arrive at Grassmarket Square. Facing it, Mary’s Milk Bar is beloved by locals and travelers alike for its handmade gelato. Owner Mary, a former chocolatier, offers different gelato and chocolate flavors every day. Here, try a gelato that highlights distinctly Scottish flavors, such as the “Malt Dark Chocolate.” Vegan gelato is on the menu as well. Don’t forget to snap a photo with the majestic Edinburgh Castle, which rises right in front of the shop, as your backdrop.

A little farther west of Grassmarket Square, Armchair Books is a secondhand bookstore that no time-traveling trip through Edinburgh should miss. Shelves divided up to the ceiling are packed with old books sorted by field, from classic literature to philosophy, science, and detective fiction. As you wander the maze-like tunnels of books along the creaking wooden floor, you may feel as though you’ve stepped into a scene from the “Harry Potter” series. Book lovers should visit during the Edinburgh International Book Festival, held every summer. During the festival, writers from around the world gather at venues across the city for talks, workshops, performances, and other events. In 2025, it runs from August 9 to 24.
